Salem Witch Trials Amanda Melville September 2, 2014 Before times went chaotic in Salem Village, Betty Parris and Abigail Williams were acting out of order to nearby neighbors and their parents. Being Puritans, the town folks found this behavior unusual, so the young girls announced that they felt stabbing pains, pinching, and a choking feeling. One of the most interesting theories which has emerged about the cause of the Salem witch trials was first introduced in 1976 by Linnda Caporeal. She theorizes that the cause of the bizarre physical afflictions first witnessed in the “bewitched” girls could be the result of ergot poisoning. Apr 16, 2013 The Salem witch trials were certainly a bizarre sequence of events, and numerous theories have been proposed to attempt to explain them. Historians have tended to propose that the girls supposedly afflicted with “distempers” were frauds or hysterics, but many doubt these theories. After being stuck in their homes all winter and living the Puritan lifestyle, it is said by some that the Witchcraft Trials were created by the young girls for entertainment purposes. As can be demonstrated by the map below, many individuals of the agrarian lifestyle convicted those in Salem Town of witchcraft. The convulsions experienced by the afflicted were said to have been caused by ergo poisoning. Due to several pivotal factors, it is said that the witchcraft trials were caused by a moment of mass hysteria, which resulted in the young girls experiencing fits. Since North America was mostly wilderness during this time, citizens of the colonies feared traveling into the woods/wilderness because of Native American attacks. In fact, Tituba was one of the first individuals suspected of witchcraft, which could be related to her race. Age: If looked at closely, there is evidence that this was an attack by the youth on the older generation. Gender: Many consider Salem to be an attack on women; however, there were men executed in Salem as well. One of the least popular theories but still proposed is the actual existence of witchcraft. The Salem Witch Trials are in a class below the Cold War for many reasons, one being the total events pertaining to their respective conflicts. As the Salem Witch Trials lasted for a gruesome six months and twenty-two days the Cold War however triumphs that by recording a whopping 46 years from 1945 to 1991 (WikiAnswers; Clair). Mass hysteria is characterized by the rapid spread of conversion disorder, a condition involving the appearance of bodily complaints for which there is no organic basis. In such episodes, psychological distress is converted or channeled into physical symptoms. Symptoms typically include headache, dizziness, nausea, breathlessness, and general weakness. Motor hysteria is common in intolerable social situations such as strict school and religious settings where discipline is excessive. Symptoms include trance-like states, melodramatic acts of rebellion known as histrionics, and what physicians term 'psychomotor agitation'. In short, mass hysterias are collective delusions as they involve false or exaggerated beliefs, but only rarely do collective delusions involve mass hysteria as to do so, they must report illness symptoms. Many factors contribute to the formation: the mass media; rumors; extraordinary anxiety or excitement; cultural beliefs and stereotypes; the social and political context; and reinforcing actions by authorities such as politicians, or institutions of social control such as the police or military. First, it can be looked upon as a religion of the ancient and traditional worships of the feminine, earthly, and amazing aspects of God which is considered a heresy. Secondly, it goes against the beliefs of the Christian Church.
